Joy for Today

Make a joyful noise“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”    Psalm 118:24

What does it mean to rejoice and be glad in today?

Here’s one definition of the word “rejoice”:  “animated with gladness, exhilarated, feeling joy” *

Pastors and Bible scholars often state that there is a difference between happiness and joy.  The writers at GotQuestions.org state their belief in this way:  “The Bible teaches that happiness is fleeting because it often depends on things outside of ourselves, but true joy is eternal because it is based on our relationship with Jesus Christ, which is itself an everlasting source of joy.”

We shouldn’t be as focused solely upon happiness which is dependent on outward circumstances.  Our joy in the Lord is based on an internal constant – our relationship with Him.

joy Joy joyWhat does the Bible say regarding joy?
  1. *  Psalm 4:7 –  “You have filled my heart with greater joy.”
God is the source and provider of joy in our lives.
  2. *  Psalm 19:8 –  “The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.”
God’s Word also brings joy to the life of the believer because it is right.

*  Psalm 92:4 –  “For you make me glad by your deeds, O Lord; I sing for joy at the work of your hands.”
God’s mighty works can bring us joy as we consider His mighty power, His creativity, and His kindness.

*  Acts 16:34 –  “The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God – he and his whole family.”
Salvation brought joy to the Philippian jailer.

*  2 Corinthians 7:4b –   “in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.”
Even in the midst of problems, we can have endless joy as we learn to keep our minds focused on God and his promises.

*  Galatians 5:22 –   “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.”
Joy is one of the evidences of our spiritual conversion and our relationship with Christ.

*  1 Thessalonians 1:6b –   “in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy of the Holy Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit gives us joy, revealing God’s love and care for us in countless ways.

*  1 Thessalonians 5:16 –  “Be joyful always…”
We are commanded to always be joyful, a similar verse reminds us that we are “abounding in hope”.

*  James 1:2 –  “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds.”
We should be joyful even when we face trials in life,  choosing joy in spite of circumstances.

Trust God with todayWhat does the Bible say about “today”?

“So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.”   Hebrews 4:7
Although this verse probably referred to salvation (similiar to “today is the day of salvation”), we can also enter His rest by choosing to spend time in meditation and prayer.  As we allow God to specak to our hearts, we have chosen His rest rather than choosing to harden our hearts by allowing worry or doubt to take hold.

“Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.”    Exodus 14:13
The Egyptians had been the captors of the children of Israel and then became their pursuers, intending to punish them and take them captive once more.  Moses encouraged the people to believe and to trust firmly in God’s deliverance.  After all that God had already done in sending the plagues on Egypt to secure the release of His people, He was not going to allow them to be re-captured and enslaved again.  What holds you captive and pursues your heart?  God has promised delieverance to those who will stand firm and trust him.

“I am making this covenant both with you who stand here today in the presence of the LORD our God, and also with the future generations who are not standing here today.”   Deuteronomy 29:15
God was always thinking of us.  Though we had not yet been born, we were in His heart.  His covenant and His promises are for us!  As the Psalmist said, “What is man that You are mindful of him?”  And yet, He is.  YOU are on God’s mind and in His heart.

“For he says, ‘In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.’  I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”   2 Corinthians 6:2
Isn’t it incredible the lengths to which God has gone to show His favor to us and to offer us salvation.  He did not withhold His only Son.  He loved us while we were yet sinners.  He sent the Holy Spirit to convict our hearts and speak to our hearts to call us to Himself.  When you have already said “yes” to God’s salvation, you are the apple of His eye.  His favor rests on you.  This is not just the favor of an earthly King.  God’s favor is the merciful and loving goodness of the King of all creation!

“The Sovereign LORD has given me His words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning, He wakens me and opens my understanding to His will.”   Isaiah 50:4
God has given us His word, full of promises, assurance and comfort.  He gives us His peace when we fix our minds upon Him.  He opens our minds to the understanding of the eternal, even when the temporary circumstances of our lives seem overwhelming or even hopeless.  He sends others to strengthen and encourage us, working in their hearts as well so that they may know how to comfort us; and sometimes He allows us to be the one with words of comfort or just a comforting presence for others.

“But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.  The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”   2 Peter 3:8& 9
Never forget God’s patience and His complete understanding.  He is not slow to hear your prayers.  He is patient.  Unlike us, he is not prone to act hastily or unwisely.  There is time…an eternity of time…for God to make everything right and to wipe away all sorrow, giving us the incredible, eternal gift of being present with Him in Heaven, where the joy and delight will be beyond anything we can imagine and will never end!

The joy of the Lord“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”   Psalm 118:24
Today, we can rejoice and be glad!  We have a loving God who is a keeper of promises.  He is patient, kind, merciful, and good.  He cares about everything in our lives.  He is the God of all comfort.  He saw our need and sent His only Son to provide salvation.  He is preparing a place in heaven for you!  As Babbie Mason’s song, “What Can Separate You (From the Precious Love of God)” says, “To give you life forever, He left no stone unturned“.  He is the lover of your soul and the keeper of your heart.

“In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”   Psalm 5:3
May we choose to begin the day seeking God, knowing that He hears us.  May we wait expectantly for His work in our lives and on our behalf.  May we wait, trusting Him, and choosing joy in the waiting!

Dear friend, rejoice today; and be glad in the loving kindness of the one true God, whose mercy endures forever!

Here are the words to a brand new song by Travis L. Boyd.  This song is special and will bless a lot of hearts.  May it be a reminder of God’s love and care and the way He meets us where we are and surrounds us with His loving presence.
Cape Blanco LighthouseEARLY IN THE MORNING
by Travis L. Boyd

Early in the morning
When the night is gone,
Creation awakens
To welcome the dawn.

Early in the morning
At the break of day,
Your glory shines forth
In the beautiful world You have made.

Early in the morning,
When I bow in prayer,
Your presence surrounds me.
I rest in Your care.

Early in the morning,
When I speak Your name,
Your peace overwhelms me.
My soul must proclaim…

Hallelujah, Amen!
Hallelujah, Amen!

(bridge)
Morning by morning,  Your mercies are new.
Lovingly, You guide my way.
Moment by moment, You shepherd my soul,
Giving me strength and  fulfilling my days.

Early in the morning,
I will lift my voice
To worship and praise You,
My soul must rejoice!

Hallelujah, Amen!
Hallelujah, Amen!
Hallelujah!  Hallelujah, Amen!

Faith in the One True God

FAITH block lettersIt is impossible to live without having faith. When we eat something, we have faith that what we are eating will nourish our bodies and alleviate our physical hunger. When we walk across a floor or sit down in a chair, we have faith in the strength of the structures that support us. When we trust any part of our hearts in relationships with others, we have faith that the individuals we are choosing to trust will not disappoint us. A quarterback must have faith in the other players on his football team in order to think clearly and pass or carry the ball.

Sometimes, things happen that shake our faith.

A structure collapses.
A friend betrays.
A relationship falters or dissolves.
What we had thought we could count upon is suddenly proven unreliable.

The world is constantly changing.
People change.
Your life will change.
Relationships change.
Economic reality changes.

However, there is one thing that you can count upon that will never change:

the character and person of God!

“I am the LORD, and I do not change.”   Malachi 3:6a

Change occurs with a new season or stage of life, with realization of the need for improvement, or with deterioration or calamity. But, God is eternal. God does not need improvement. His ways are perfect. He has no need to change. We can place our faith and trust in Him with the sure knowledge that the God we trusted in the past will be trustworthy today and throughout all eternity. The most critical decision a person can make is in whom or in what one places faith. Most assuredly, you and I can rely on God, no matter what happens in our lives. Everything around us may change, but He will not change. He is not given to act on a whim or impulse. His character, His essence, His being is the same…yesterday, today, and forever!

Here is what the Bible says about Who God is:

God is Love.

“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” I John 4:8

God is Good.

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.” Psalm 136:1

God is Patient.

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. II Peter 3:9

God is Perfect.

“As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.” Psalm 18:30

God is Holy.

“There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” I Samuel 2:2

God is Faithful.

“He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4

God always keeps His promises.

“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” II Corinthians 1:20

God works all things together for our good.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

We have a God who loves us, who cares about everything in our lives, who hears our prayers, who provided a Savior to meet our needs, and who has prepared a place in Heaven for us. Until we reach that home in Heaven, we live by faith in the One who is unchangeable and perfect in holiness. Here are some scriptures and quotes about faith to encourage and inspire you in your faith journey.

“Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith brings out endurance and steadfastness and patience.” James 1: 3

He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12: 2

“Through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Romans 5: 2 (NKJV)

Walking by Faith“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5: 7 (NKJV)

“For [if we are] in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith activated and energized and expressed and working through love.” Galations 5: 6

1 Thessalonians 1:3 We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:22-26 But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,

Ephesians 6:16 (KJV) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Acts 15:8-9 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.

faith in GodRomans 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

2 Corinthians 4:13-14 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.

Billy Graham’s answer to a question about struggling to hold on to faith while dealing with doubt:

“God wants us to trust Him completely and totally—and when we doubt, we aren’t trusting Him as we should. The Bible warns that the person who constantly doubts God and fails to trust Him “is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does” (James 1:8).

"Oh, glorious Victory, that overcomes the world!" (from the hymn, "Faith is the Victory," with lyrics by John H. Yates and music by Ira D. Sankey)

“Oh, glorious Victory, that overcomes the world!” (from the hymn, “Faith is the Victory,” with lyrics by John H. Yates and music by Ira D. Sankey)

At the same time, God understands our doubts, and the most important thing I can tell you is that He wants to take them away and increase our faith. Do you remember Thomas, who was one of Jesus’ closest disciples? When others told him that Jesus had been raised from the dead after His crucifixion, Thomas refused to believe it. He declared, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it” (John 20:25).

How did Jesus respond? He didn’t rebuke Thomas or tell him just to have more faith. Instead, Jesus came to him and showed him that He was alive. The response was immediate: “Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!'” (John 20:28). Tradition says Thomas became an evangelist and preached the Gospel as far as India.

When doubts come, don’t let them take root in your soul. Instead, turn them over to Christ. Most of all, saturate your heart and mind every day with the truths of God’s Word, the Bible. Satan will try to turn you away, but in Christ “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19).”

Blessings through choosing to praise God

**THE  JUBALHEIRS**

It’s easy to rejoice in the Lord when all is well, but the choice to praise Him in times of adversity comes with maturity in our faith.   As we trust the Lord more and more in our walk with Him, we learn to lean upon His promises when we go through times of darkness.  In times of trial and grief, He promises to give beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the heaviness of sorrow.  (Isaiah 61:3)  The promises of God in this verse also apply to the fruit that our choice to praise Him in trials will bring.  The same scripture verse tells us that the fulfillment of these precious promises will be “that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.”   No one who leads worship can escape a deep awareness that there are always people in any service of worship who have come with heavy hearts.  The most comforting truth that we can cling to in such times is that God knows all about our pain and our sorrow.  He is right there with us in the midst of the storm, even when we are not aware of His presence.   As we learn to trust His heart, His love for us, and His nearness, we can make the choice to praise God and allow Him to work on healing our hearts.

Cindy and I are still in the process of getting to know our sisters in the Lord who are members of the Georgia Baptist Convention’s Jubalheirs, directed by Dr. Jon Duncan.  Several of these talented ladies are members of our home church whom we know quite well, but we are so new to Georgia that we are still becoming acquainted with the wider membership of the Jubalheirs and their Ministers of Worship and home churches.  However, it’s been evident to us, even in a relatively short time period, that the Jubalheirs are women who love to praise the Lord.  Their radiant faces and beautiful voices testify of their love for God and longing to be more like Christ.  Many of the songs in their repertoire have very profound messages of deep faith, so it was an honor when Dr. Duncan selected my anthem, “Much More Than a Song”  for the Jubalheirs’ repertoire not long before our move to Georgia.  “Much More Than a Song”  is a reflective ballad with a message about choosing to praise God in times of trial.  The Jubalheirs have also recorded this song on their CD entitled “New Every Morning.”   When Cindy and I came to Georgia to meet with the Music and Worship Search Committee in 2008, I’d been asked to sing for them.  We sang some worship songs together, and then I sang a solo, choosing “Much More Than a Song.”  I didn’t know that 3 of the women on the search committee were members of the Jubalheirs and had already sung this song until after I finished singing.  It was a fairly new song at the time and was only in it’s second year of inclusion in the repertoire of The Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma.  It never occurred to me that some of the committee members would have not only heard the song but also had sung it in concert.  It’s amazing how God puts things togethers sometimes, and that will always be a special memory for me.   We look forward to many other special times of worship in our home church and around the state of Georgia with our sisters in Christ in the Jubalheirs and our brothers in the Sons of Jubal.

This year, the Jubalheirs are singing one of my newest choral anthems, “Greater.”   They recorded it in September, 2011, for their newest CD project, which has not yet been releasesd.   “Greater”  is also a song about praising God in every circustance.  In the lyrics of  “Greater,” the listener is reminded that our God is greater than any challenge we may face.   And, just like my good friend David Neely (and his wife, Phyllis), who is mentioned on the title page of “Greater,”  I am confident that the women of the Jubalheirs will trust in our great God no matter what life brings.   “Greater” was written for the glory of God and to encourage my friend and all of God’s people.  What a blessing it is to know that the women of the Jubalheirs will share this message with passion and with integrity, choosing to praise the Lord in all of life.

“His name is higher!
His love is deeper!
He reigns forever and ever more!
Alpha, Omega, Master, and Savior…
Far above anything, of His praises we’ll sing
And at His feet we’ll fall.
For our God, yes, our God is greater than all!”

Lyrics from “Greater”
