Song Story: “For the Glory of God”

“For the Glory of God”  is a choral anthem written by Travis L. Boyd, which can currently be found on our website’s Adult Choir music page in SATB, SSAA, and TTBB voicings.  There is also a full orchestration available for this anthem.   “For the Glory of God”  features gently syncopated verses which lyrically extol the character and person of our great God, along with a strong chorus that begins with a statement of who God is in our lives, leading into an “Alleluia”  section that ends with a description of our praise for Him and a re-statement of the reason for our praise.  This anthem is in the current repertoire of the Georgia Baptist Convention’s Jubalheirs, under the direction of Dr. Jon Duncan

First Baptist Church of Dublin, Georgia

A SONG STORY
“For the Glory of God” has been a demonstration of love that began as a desire to glorify God while also encouraging the heart of a Georgia Minister of Worship.  Travis was contacted by some people who were active members of the Chancel Choir at First Baptist Church of Dublin, Georgia.  They wanted to commission an anthem in honor of the 25th Anniversary of service to the Lord and to their congregation by their Minister of Worship and Music, Dick Burrell.  It was the desire of these good people to encourage the heart of this dear servant of God through a worship song that could be sung by the choir on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary and would also then be sung by countless churches all around the world for the glory of God.  Travis normally takes as inspiration for any commission work the favorite scripture and favorite hymn title of the person or group the song is being written for.   In this case, there were no specifics given along these lines.   Travis was told that Dick likes rhythmic choral anthems.   Of course, the ultimate purpose of the piece would be to bring glory to God while also being a personal expression of love and encouragement from the choir members to their Director and Minister of Worship, who had served faithfully for many years and had recently lost his dear wife, Vicki.

The First Baptist, Dublin, ministry team did a great job pulling off the surprise for our brother Dick Burrell.  What a great testimony of love from these people, who began working on this surprise months in advance.  I know that brother Dick and all of their church would join with Travis and myself in praying that this song will go on to touch and reach hearts that we will not know on this side of Heaven.  Here is the thank you
e-mail that brother Dick sent to Travis on Monday, Jan. 9th, 2012, after he been surprised with the anthem the day before:

Dick Burrell leading in worship, with the FBC Dublin Chancel Choir

“Dear Travis,

Thank you so much for the anthem, For the Glory of God.  The Chancel Choir (over 40 voices yesterday) sang it in our morning worship.  They had rehearsed whenever I was out of town at our church and other times when I was in town at either Pine Forest Methodist or FUMC.  They did a wonderful job.  Our pianist was a piano performance major at Shorter in the early 70’s and did post grad work at the Mozarteum in Austria.  They all got such a kick out of keeping this from me—-I had no clue.  I look forward to a bit later working on it with them and doing the anthem again.  You may not know that the Jubals sang God Is Faithful at my sweet Vicki’s memorial service last March, so, it was most appropriate that they commissioned you to compose the anthem for my 25th anniversary.

Dick Burrell

Thank you, again.

Dick Burrell”
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
May God use this anthem and all who direct or sing or play it for His glory!
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
“For the Glory of God,”  like all of Travis’ anthems, is written to be performed with or without the full orchestration.  The piano part is supportive, and chord symbols are included on the music for a rhythm section.   The orchestration is written to be practical for church orchestra and will work with a wide variety of instrumentation, though all of the parts are available for full instrumentation.  Travis is always careful in the writing of an orchestration to allow the orchestra to meaningfully enhance the performance of the anthem but also to make sure that the choir is not “covered up” when the orchestra plays.  You will be more than happy with the results of this attention to detail and to the communication of the message.

“For the Glory of God” is available on our website’s adult choir page @ http://www.worshipsounds.com   You purchase the PDF master copy in your choice of full page or octavo format for $15.00, and then you are allowed to make an unlimited number of copies (for your own choir and rhythm section only).  The orchestration, which includes parts for all instruments, a full score, and a string reduction for keyboard, is $30.00.

“For the Glory of God” can be found on our Worship Sounds Music website, on the Adult Choir music page.  http://www.worshipsounds.com

Blessings through community

* The CHORAL GUILD of ATLANTA*

The Choral Guild of Atlanta is an organization with a long history of service and commitment to the cultural environment in the Atlanta area and beyond.  In its 72nd year, the Choral Guild is a true community chorus, with membership open to anyone who meets musical qualifications.  Their concert of May 6th, 2012 was titled “Georgia:  The Past Meets the Present.”  It featured choral settings of music from the Civil War era in the first half of the program and choral works by contemporary composers who have a connection to Georgia in the second program section.  A few weeks before the concert, Travis was notified by Director Clair Maxwell that his anthem, “Amazing Grace!  Eternal Life!”  had been selected for inclusion in the second half of the program.  Travis was also invited to attend the concert and to introduce the anthem, which was the first selection in the second half of the program.

Travis and I went to the May 6th afternoon concert without knowing exactly what to expect, although we did know that the chorus has a reputation for excellence.  The concert was held in the Chapel of Northside Drive Baptist Church in Atlanta.  It’s a great place for singing, with acoustics that enliven the sound without adding an echo.  Our musical impressions were very favorable, and we really enjoyed the concert.  Here is an excerpt from a post we placed on the Choral Guild’s facebook page so all of the membership could see it, thanking the group for the experience and for the honor of having one of Travis’ works performed:

“It was great to be able to join you for the afternoon concert.  You sang (and conducted…and played) with sensitivity and artistry as you shared a variety of lyrical content.  The emphasis on the value of various musical styles and genres was reflected in the eclectic nature of your program and in your attention to lyrical messages that were sometimes historical and sometimes literary or spiritual.  My wife and I greatly enjoyed the concert, and I am honored that you chose to perform “Amazing Grace!  Eternal Life!’ and did so with excellence.  We also enjoyed the opportunity to meet and talk with many of you in person.  Blessings to you all as you continue to use your God-given talents and sing together with your Atlanta Choral Guild family.

Sincerely, Travis L. Boyd”

Even though all of the Choral Guild’s repertoire was very well performed, musical excellence was not the only impression that has stayed with us from the concert and the reception that followed.  Our primary observation about the group is that they are a community of musicians who share a love for choral music, with all of the depth of relationship that the word “community” implies.  For example, the following elements of community were very evident in the conversations that we were able to join:

* A community is a group of people who care about one another.
It was obvious that many of the people in the Choral Guild have been members for a long time and have grown to love one another like an extended family.

* A community works together to accomplish common goals.
Whether rehearsing for a concert, recording a CD, or touring around the world, the Choral Guild has obviously been working together to promote and enjoy choral music for many years.

* A community welcomes opportunities for growth and for new community members.
Through the eclectic and historical nature of their program, the premiere of a new work, the inclusion of contemporary composers, the opportunity for composers to be invited to attend the concert and introduce their works and then spend time in conversation with chorus members, other composers, and guests, the Choral Guild of Atlanta has demonstrated a desire to embrace both historical and contemporary music as well as works in various styles and with both sacred and secular texts.  Their website offers audition information for anyone wishing to become a member of the Atlanta Choral Guild.  From our experience, I am sure that along with becoming a representative of the organization and a member of the chorus comes a membership that is of even higher importance:  inclusion in a community of committed volunteers who are doing their part to see that choral music remains an important cultural force and a viable and valuable form of musical expression.

This photo of the Atlanta Choral Guild was taken at the concert described in this blog post.

Blessings through surrender

** THE  SONS  OF  JUBAL**

The Georgia Baptist Convention’s Sons of Jubal are a large Men’s Chorus from all over the State of Georgia, Directed by Dr. Jon Duncan.  The Sons of Jubal meet together for a retreat to rehearse, introduce new members, and learn new music in January each year.   Then, they present worship concerts in Churches and other venues once a month except in the months of December, June, and July.   Many of these men are full-time or bi-vocational Ministers of Music and Worship, and some hold other positions of leadership and service within their home churches and within the Georgia Baptist Convention.   Travis has been a member of this group since January of 2009.  It has been a joy for him to have the opportunity to meet and serve with these gifted and dedicated men.   It has also been a great learning experience for him to travel around the state to present worship concerts in various churches.  We are getting to know the state, the communities, the churches, ministers, and ministries, the needs, and the people of Georgia through the experiences and relationships that have come our way because of this group and the women’s choir, The Jubalheirs.

The Sons of Jubal have sung several songs written by Travis.  Before we moved to Georgia, they were singing  “God is Faithful”  and had recorded it as the title song on one of their CDs.  They have also sung some of the TTBB arrangements done by Travis for The Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma.   The Sons of Jubal Ensemble, directed by Steve Brown,  is currently singing Travis’  a cappella arrangement of  “(I Am a) Friend of God.”   The current repertoire of the full choir includes Travis’ song, “A Prayer for the Saints,” which was recently recorded on a new Sons of Jubal CD titled “Washed Away”.  We are thankful that the ministry of the Sons of Jubal will allow these songs to touch many hearts.

For us, the song that we will always associate with The Sons of Jubal is  “Where You Want Me to Be.”   Though the song has also been performed by The Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma and was part of the Churchmen’s 50th Anniversary Concert repertoire, directed by both Dr. Ken Gabrielse and Dr. Bill Green, “Where You Want Me to Be” was originally arranged in TTBB voicing for The Sons of Jubal and is dedicated to the group and to Dr. Jon Duncan.  It has seemed very fitting that the first Sons of Jubal song on which Travis sang a solo was “Where You Want Me to Be.”   In this, and in many ways, the Lord has confirmed in our hearts his calling to our current church home and place of service in Georgia after many years of serving in Oklahoma.  The true message of the song, “Where You Want Me to Be”  goes far beyond geographical location, however.   It’s a message for every Christian, one that our Christina brothers and sisters in both Oklahoma and Georgia and all over the world can take to heart.  “Where You Want Me to Be”  is about surrender.  It is only through surrender to God’s sovereignty that we find peace in a broken world.   It is through surrender to His call that we find joy in serving.  It is through surrender to his Holiness that we are humbled and see ourselves as we are…in need of a Savior, in need of His presence and guidance in our lives, and in need of His mercy.   Ultimately, it is in surrender to His plan for our lives that we find our purpose and draw upon His strength to become what He made us to be.   It is this unity of purpose in seeking to glorify the Lord in all of life and through the gift of music that has drawn our hearts to the wonderful people that we have met in Georgia, and we look forward to many more years of serving together and bringing praise to our God.  As we all choose to surrender ourselves and seek to reflect His light more and more, we are right where He wants us to be.

Travis and Cindy Boyd

Ideas for Choir Appreciation Sunday/ Music Ministry Sunday

Sunday, January 8th, 2012, was set aside as as the first National Choir Appreciation Sunday.   However, since appreciation, thankfulness, and encouragement are always appropriate at every time of year, such an event is a good reminder for those who lead in Music and Worship Ministry to also demonstrate leadership in expressing their thankfulness publicly for the volunteers who give so much of their time and energy to participate in Choir and other Music Ministry organizations.

See the Facebook page for this event at:  http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/National-Choir-Appreciation-Sunday/250302075020204?sk=info

Remember that the designated date for Choir Appreciation Sunday is not the only time that you can plan an appreciation event for your choir or for all of your music ministry participants.  January may not be the best month for such an event at your church.  It can be difficult to come back right after Christmas and plan a large musical event within the month.  So, if you want to plan an Appreciation Sunday event for your Choir(s) or for all of your Music Ministry volunteers (musicians, tech team, drama group, etc),  good planning is essential.  Here are some suggestions and ideas that you may want to consider or implement.

1.  After you have formulated some plans in your mind and before you do any publicity, share your plans with your Pastor and at Staff Planning Meeting.  Your Pastor and fellow Ministers may have some ideas that will be helpful guidance for you in selecting the best date to have such an emphasis and also some ideas about how to proceed with planning that may give a boost to your own creativity.  The primary thing that you need to stress is that you want to say “thank you” to these faithful Music Ministry participants without taking the focus off of our mighty God, who is the Source of music, the Giver of gifts, and the reason we sing.  Remember that you do not have to stick to the January 8th date if that does not allow enough time for preparation right after the Christmas holidays or work well for your church, your groups, or your calendar.   Flexibility is key.

2.  In doing your planning to prepare for meeting with your Pastor and Ministerial Staff, pray for direction.  For example, you need to determine whether to make this a Music Ministry Appreciation Sunday or whether to just make the Choir your focus.   You may have other groups that you want to include in this time of thanksgiving, such as accompanists, orchestra, handbell choirs, age-group choirs (from pre-school choir to Sr. Adult Choir and everything in between), praise teams, rhythm section, tech teams, etc.

If your focus is to be for all of the Music Ministry groups, you could use a “Celebration Sunday” approach, with several groups sharing messages in song or performing together, keeping the focus on worship.  At some point, you could direct the attention of the congregation to the fact that God is the Source and Giver of Music and musical talents, that He sings over us, and that He has blessed your church with some incredible volunteers in Music Ministry.   You could ask the congregation to join you in thanking God through prayer for the gifts that He has given and the privelege of singing (and playing) music for His glory.   Applause in thanksgiving would also be appropriate, again directed at God.  At the conclusion of this focus time, I would recommend a brief statement, encouraging your congregation to verbally express their thanks to the people who are involved as volunteers in Music Ministry in your church whenever possible. stating that we all need to encourage one another, and saying that verbal encouragement to anyone who serves in any capacity within the fellowship lifts the body of Christ and draws our hearts closer to one another.   Then, get back to praise and worship of the One who gives us a reason to serve, to sing, to play, to teach, and to love.
Your Pastor may want to tie his message to the focus for the day, perhaps preaching about encouraging one another or about worship in general, but this is not absolutely necessary.  However, your planning and communication with him gives him the opportunity to do this if he feels led in this direction.

3.  Combine Choirs and include groups of all ages!  Plan to have the Youth Choir and Senior Adult Choir join the Adult Choir in sharing a message on our special emphasis Sunday.  This is the sort of thing that requires advance planning for all of the groups’ schedules as well as a little bit of extra rehearsal time, so repertore decisions and decisions about which groups to include need to take place in the early stages of planning.  (Note:  see a couple of repertoire suggestions at the end of this blog poat.)  At our church, these 3 groups could sing a song that our Senior Adult Choir already knows and has just shared at our statewide Senior Adult Choir festival.  In rehearsal times, invite your Senior Adult Choir into the Youth Choir rehearsal to help the young people learn the song. Most churches have some very lively and fun-loving Senior Adults, so this should be an energetic and enjoyable time for all.   Then, plan a joint rehearsal with all three groups, along with accompanists or orchestra and rhythm section, prior to the special emphasis Sunday.   Here are some additional ideas (some that would work best for an All-inclusive Music Minstry Celebration Sunday, and several that would work well for a Choir Appreciation focus) to consider during your planning:

a.  If you have worship banners that are not up in your Sanctuary or Worship Center all the time, consider using these to add to the celebration (of giving thanks for God’s gift of music and for the musical gifts within your volunteer musical groups) in your service that day.   Or, you may want to use several weeks to focus on the attributes of God before the focused Celebration Sunday comes to pass.  For example, if you have a banner that says, “Lamb of God,”  make this your focus on a particular Sunday.  Sing songs and read scripture that relate to the sacrifice of Jesus as the Lamb of God.  Then, if you have another banner that says, “King of Kings,” make that your focus on another week.   Save your “Jesus”  or “Lord of Lords”  or  “Mighty God” banner for the final week of Celebration emphasis when you will express thanks for your faithful Music Ministry volunteers but primarily focus on the God who has formed them, gifted them, saved them, and called them to serve.

b.  You could also have a few Music Ministry volunteers give a brief testimony, one each week, in the weeks leading up to your special emphasis Sunday.  They could tell what the opportunity to serve in this way means to them and how God speaks to them through music.

c.  Enter singing praises!  You could begin the special service by leading a worship chorus with only your accompanists and rhythm section on the platform or in the loft area.  Then have your choir come in (from the back of your Worship Center) near the end of that song or during a second, more upbeat, worship song or hymn, singing as they come down the aisles.   If you involve multiple choirs, this could be especially effective; and banners that relate to worship and praise could be carried in at the front of each group.  Perhaps each Adult or Senior Adult Choir member could walk beside a child from your childrens choirs, making sure that ‘their’ child winds up standing where the Childrens’ Choir is supposed to be (perhaps on risers or just in a group in front of the Youth and Adult Choirs).  You could even ask the congregation to stand in worship of our mighty God and join your choirs and/or musicians in lifting praise to Him.  Then, you could have an excellent trumpet player play a short but majestic fanfare just prior to the song or hymn that is used for the choir’s entrance.  Fanfare guidelines:  if someone else (your trumpet player, for example) chooses the fanfare that will be played, make sure he/she knows what key will work well with the hymn or chorus that is to follow, make sure that it is not a familiar fanfare (such as the well known ones used for the Olympics), and listen to it being played to give your final OK.   For the choral procession, I would suggest “Worthy of Worship” as a great hymn choice or “Sing to the King”  if you prefer to use a chorus.

d.  If you want to use your banners or media to focus on the attributes of God, you could build excitement leading up to the special Sunday by focusing on one attribute or name of God (Lamb of God, Bread of Life, Holy, or whatever your banners say) in each of several Sundays leading up to the planned special Worship Ministry Sunday.   During each of these services where you are focusing on a specific attribute or name of God, have each song that is shared by whatever group focus on that attribute or name, ending with the most significant attribute(s) or name(s) (such as Lord of Lords, King of Kings, Savior, Mighty God) being used on the special Sunday, with appropriate music choices.  You can also use all of your banners on that one Sunday by focusing each song or scripture reading on a different attribute or name of God (having that banner carried in during the appropriate song), ending with a “Lord of Lords” or “Mighty God”  banner and focus.  You could even have various lay leaders help you to end the time of musical praise by having each person emphatically state the name for God or for Christ on one of your banners; and when all the names have been pronounced, say that this is why we worship Him.   He is worthy of our praise.

e.  You could choose to have a Choir Reunion or Music Ministry Reunion be a part of your special day.  If there are former members that you could contact who live within driving distance and could join you for a special Sunday emphasis, this could be very meaningful.  Be sure to give them a few weeks notice in your invitation to come.   This could also serve as a reminder of the ultimate Choir reunion that will take place someday in Heaven.

f.  Use your media capabilities to the fullest.  Have pictures of your groups (in rehearsal, from special productions, serving in various ways on mission trips, etc.) that are shown on the screen as you speak about them or when they join together to sing (and play) a special worship song.

g.  Do some research and study about the use of choirs in worship and praise (in the Bible and throughout the history of the church) so that you may be able to share some specific scriptures or brief facts during your service.  (Note:  See our page entitled “Lift Your Voice (worship scriptures)” for a great worship scripture reference from both the Old and New Testaments.  Here is the link:  http://www.worshipsounds.wordpress.com/lift-your-voice/

h.  Remember that this is a special day of encouragement and thankfulness for the people of God who use their talents to glorify God, and then ultimately direct all praise toward God Himself, who is always worthy of our thankfulness for every good thing.

i.  You could have a special dinner after the morning worship service for your Choir(s) or for all Music Ministry volunteers (at your church or at a restaurant).  This dinner could end with a prayer of commitment to continue to use our gifts in His service.

j.  Attempt to keep the focus on worship of God and Jesus and off of yourself as Worship Leader, Minister, or Pastor.  Worship is the privelege of every Christian, and you could even have a couple of teachable moments for your congregation (about 24/7 worship, seeking to glorify Him in all that we do) woven into the fabric of your focused worship time.  To help emphasize the point that worship is so much more than just singing or hearing a song, if you use a bulletin, make sure that it utilizes specific worship headings, such as”
“Worship through contemplation”   (prelude)
“Worship through proclamation”   (song of proclamation of who God is, His power, what He has done…)
“Worship through giving”  (tithes and offering)
“Worship through testimony” (spoken or sung)
“Worship through exhortation”  (a message or song of challenge or encouragement)
“Worship through thanksgiving”  (sung, spoken, or prayed)
“Worship through prayer”
“Worship through praise”
“Worship through the spoken Word”  (scripture reading)
“Worship through the proclamation of the Word”  (sermon)

You get the idea.  All that we do is worship when done with the motivation of glorifying God.
For help with ideas for communicating a theology of lifestyle worship, see our page entitled “Lifestyle Worship” at http://www.worshipsounds.wordpress.com/lifestyle-worship/

k.  Use a meaningful reading at some point, such as excerpts from David Nassar’s book, “Glory Revealed.”   Begin reading on page 30, chapter 2, (titled ” Glory Revealed Through Conversation) under the bold print heading, “…every song we sing to the Lord is a duet and not a solo.”  Read through the end of the chapter (slightly less than 3 pages).  You will probably want to make some cuts in the text, such as the section on lullabies, for use in congregational worship; but this is a very meaningful passage that can change the outlook of individuals regarding worship for the remainder of their lives.  Decide whether to have one person read this or to divide the lines up between 2 readers, and make sure this is well-prepared in order to be most effective.

Here are a few suggestions for your repertoire on Choir Appreciation Sunday or Music Ministry Appreciation Sunday:

1.  “Sometimes I Hear God’s Music”
lyrics by the late J. Paul Williams
music by Joseph M. Martin
If this piece is already in your library, you may want to consider re-purchasing it in the updated version released as part of the “Legacy” series honoring well-known lyricist J. Paul Williams.  The arrangement has been updated by composer Joseph M. Martin, and a new orchestration has been written for this piece by Stan Pethel.   This piece is now available for SSA and TTB in addition to the SATB voicing.  For more information, here is a link to the publisher’s info page:
http://www.halleonard.com/product/viewproduct.do?itemid=35020874
To listen to the updated version of  “Sometimes I Hear God’s Music”  in SATB voicing, with the new orchestration, use this link:  http://listeninglab.stantons.com/title/sometimes-i-hear-gods-music/141068/

2.  “The Music of God”
lyrics by John Parker
music by Mark Hayes
Also published by the Harold Flammer division of Shawnee Press (now under Hal Leonard)
This piece is arranged for SATB choir (though much of the part writing is in SAB), with children’s choir, congregation, and flute obbligato.  It has an excellent text and beautiful melody.  It also encorporates the familiar hymn melody known as Ellacombe (“I Sing the Mighty Power of God”) for congregational singing.  I could not find a listening sample in my web searches, but you can obtain a free browser copy of this anthem on Mark Hayes’ website at this link:
http://www.markhayes.com/Anthems/THE-MUSIC-OF-GOD.html

3.  “Sing a Song to the Lord”
lyrics and music by Travis L. Boyd
published by Shawnee Press  (see info on our websites ‘Published Music’  page at http://www.worshipsounds.com )
This is a more upbeat choral praise anthem, in SATB voicing, with a contrast in styles between the legato verses and the rhythmic chorus.  Here is the Publisher’s description:  “Travis Boyd is fantastic at up-tempo rhythmic pieces and this youthful expression of praise is no exception. Use as a call to worship or as an intergenerational moment incorporating youth and adult choirs. The creative transition section builds to an impressive crescendo that is very exciting to sing and hear. Exhilarating!”

Blessings through choosing to praise God

**THE  JUBALHEIRS**

It’s easy to rejoice in the Lord when all is well, but the choice to praise Him in times of adversity comes with maturity in our faith.   As we trust the Lord more and more in our walk with Him, we learn to lean upon His promises when we go through times of darkness.  In times of trial and grief, He promises to give beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the heaviness of sorrow.  (Isaiah 61:3)  The promises of God in this verse also apply to the fruit that our choice to praise Him in trials will bring.  The same scripture verse tells us that the fulfillment of these precious promises will be “that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.”   No one who leads worship can escape a deep awareness that there are always people in any service of worship who have come with heavy hearts.  The most comforting truth that we can cling to in such times is that God knows all about our pain and our sorrow.  He is right there with us in the midst of the storm, even when we are not aware of His presence.   As we learn to trust His heart, His love for us, and His nearness, we can make the choice to praise God and allow Him to work on healing our hearts.

Cindy and I are still in the process of getting to know our sisters in the Lord who are members of the Georgia Baptist Convention’s Jubalheirs, directed by Dr. Jon Duncan.  Several of these talented ladies are members of our home church whom we know quite well, but we are so new to Georgia that we are still becoming acquainted with the wider membership of the Jubalheirs and their Ministers of Worship and home churches.  However, it’s been evident to us, even in a relatively short time period, that the Jubalheirs are women who love to praise the Lord.  Their radiant faces and beautiful voices testify of their love for God and longing to be more like Christ.  Many of the songs in their repertoire have very profound messages of deep faith, so it was an honor when Dr. Duncan selected my anthem, “Much More Than a Song”  for the Jubalheirs’ repertoire not long before our move to Georgia.  “Much More Than a Song”  is a reflective ballad with a message about choosing to praise God in times of trial.  The Jubalheirs have also recorded this song on their CD entitled “New Every Morning.”   When Cindy and I came to Georgia to meet with the Music and Worship Search Committee in 2008, I’d been asked to sing for them.  We sang some worship songs together, and then I sang a solo, choosing “Much More Than a Song.”  I didn’t know that 3 of the women on the search committee were members of the Jubalheirs and had already sung this song until after I finished singing.  It was a fairly new song at the time and was only in it’s second year of inclusion in the repertoire of The Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma.  It never occurred to me that some of the committee members would have not only heard the song but also had sung it in concert.  It’s amazing how God puts things togethers sometimes, and that will always be a special memory for me.   We look forward to many other special times of worship in our home church and around the state of Georgia with our sisters in Christ in the Jubalheirs and our brothers in the Sons of Jubal.

This year, the Jubalheirs are singing one of my newest choral anthems, “Greater.”   They recorded it in September, 2011, for their newest CD project, which has not yet been releasesd.   “Greater”  is also a song about praising God in every circustance.  In the lyrics of  “Greater,” the listener is reminded that our God is greater than any challenge we may face.   And, just like my good friend David Neely (and his wife, Phyllis), who is mentioned on the title page of “Greater,”  I am confident that the women of the Jubalheirs will trust in our great God no matter what life brings.   “Greater” was written for the glory of God and to encourage my friend and all of God’s people.  What a blessing it is to know that the women of the Jubalheirs will share this message with passion and with integrity, choosing to praise the Lord in all of life.

“His name is higher!
His love is deeper!
He reigns forever and ever more!
Alpha, Omega, Master, and Savior…
Far above anything, of His praises we’ll sing
And at His feet we’ll fall.
For our God, yes, our God is greater than all!”

Blessings through God’s Faithfulness

**THE  SINGING  CHURCHMEN  OF  OKLAHOMA**

The Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma will always be such a special group of brothers for me.   As a member of the Churchmen for over 18 years, I have very close friendships with so many of the fine Ministers of Music and Worship in this group.  We’ve travelled around the world together, sharing the good news of Christ though music, testimony, and every other way imaginable.  I’ve been to Russia, Estonia, Latvia, China, Hong Kong, and Australia with this group.  It has been a joy and a blessing to know these men, worship together with them during rehearsal times and concert performances, and then serve with them in other mission opportunities.  One of the things that is most special about this talented group is their love for the Lord and for each other.   These brothers pray for one another and are willing to help any of the group that may have a major need.  We’ve seen God answer so many prayers.  We’ve prayed for healing for each other, for those who were seeking a place of service, for family situations, and for God to use our efforts to glorify Himself.  We’ve also prayed for doors to open in the countries to which we’ve travelled.  There were often large stumbling blocks that could have been a real problem for our group and our ministry; but time after time, we saw God answer the prayers for open doors in really miraculous ways.  For example, our group made the trip to Russia, Estonia, and Latvia just after the fall of Communism, in Spring of 1993.  We were even able to minister and share the gospel in public schools, which was really amazing.

In our ministry as a group and in our individual lives, all of the Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma could testify to the faithfulness of our God.  I was inspired to write a song about God’s faithfulness in my life, and I shared it with Dr. Bill Green, who was then the Director of both The Singing Churchmen and The Singing Churchwomen of Oklahoma.  Brother Bill loved “God is Faithful” and made it part of our concert repertoire for several years.  The next time the Churchmen recorded a CD, “God is Faithful” became the title song.  The song was eventually published by the Monarch division of Lorenz music, and I have no idea at this point how many churches are still singing it.  I do hear from people regularly about how this song has touched their lives.   That’s the biggest blessing of all.  It’s a wonderful privelege to be able to share this message of God’s faithfulness with my brothers in Christ in both Oklahoma and Georgia.  The Sons of Jubal also have sung “God is Faithful,”  and it became the title song of one of their CD’s (recorded in a different year & with different repertoire from the Churchmen CD).  In addition, The Singing Churchwomen of Oklahoma have sung  “God is Faithful”  in many church concerts.  It was also sung in Australia during our Singing Churchmen mission trip, but not by the men.   The wives who went along on the mission trip to Australia in 2003 had their own choir, with over 80 of the women choosing to participate.  They divided into 2 choirs for some events and sang together for others.   These women gave concerts in churches all over the Sydney area (even in nearby seaside communities such as Cronulla) and then all over the Brisbane area, even singing at a pineapple canning factory.  They were the groups that were singing  “God is Faithful”  in Australia, though everyone who went on that trip could testify to God’s faithfulness in so many ways.

Many times, the message of  “God is Faithful”  has ministered to Cindy and I as we have faced trials.  She has said that in the messages God inspires me to write, He knows the message that we will need to hear at some point in our future.   If the song  “God is Faithful”  has been a blessing to you, remember that it is not the song itself that is the source of blessing.  It’s the TRUTH of the message of this song that makes it so meaningful to those of us who are walking with the Lord.   What a blessing it is to know that our God is faithful in all things, and that he is ever-present in our lives!

“God IS faithful.   He will not forget His own.  God is faithful…He’ll never leave you all alone!   He’s right beside you, waiting to guide you; for the One who called you is faithful.  God is faithful…when the valley is so low.  God is faithful…whereever He leads you to go!  Cast your cares on Him, and rest within His loving arms.  For the One who called you is faithful.  God IS faithful ! ”   (Lyrics to the chorus from “God is Faithful”)

Blessings through God’s Presence

This photo is of The Singing Churchwomen of Oklahoma in concert at Regency Park Baptist Church in Moore, Oklaoma, with Dr. Bill Green directing.

**THE  SINGING  CHURCHWOMEN  OF  OKLAHOMA**

The Singing Churchwomen of Oklahoma are a group near and dear to my heart.  Not only was my wife, Cindy,  a member of this group for over 14 years, but we also know so many of the women personally.   When Cindy joined the group, we were living in Western Oklahoma; so she was part of the Singing Churchwomen West (the group is so large that they only combine the East & West groups once of twice a year.  In most months, each group gives a concert on their side of the state of Oklahoma).  A few years later, I was called to a church on the East side of the state, so Cindy was then a part of the Singing Churchwomen East for several years and eventually served as their President-Elect and then President.   In addition to these connections, some of the women are the wives of Ministers of Worship; and their husbands are in The Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma, a group which I was a member of for 18 years.   I’ve met some of the wives of my brothers when they would come to our concerts or even come along as travelling companions on our mission trips.   There were also women in the group who had been part of my church choirs from all 4 of the churches that I had served in full-time ministry in Oklahoma.  The Singing Churchwomen are a very special group of women who love the Lord and each other and love to sing praises to the Lord.  I have heard some amazing, angelic sounds from this group.

It has been my joy to arrange and compose music for The Singing Churchwomen, and to hear them sing some of my music in concert and in the recordings that they have made.  In addition to pieces that I was asked to arrange or re-voice for the group, they have also sung (and sometimes recorded) many of my original choral pieces in SSAA arrangements, including “You Are a Spring,”  “Let the Trumpet Sound,”  “He Took Up a Cross,”  “One Like Me,”  and “God is Faithful.”   I’d have to say my favorite song to hear them sing was my choral anthem entitled, “I Am Here.”   This anthem is a message of hope and encouragement and a reminder that God is right here with us even when the circumstances of life are very difficult.   Knowing so many of these women and the challenges and trials they have overcome and endured, it was like listening to the beautiful combined voices of so many sisters in Christ, sharing their personal testimony of God’s nearness in their time of need.   This particular photo is very meaningful to me because I served at Regency Park Baptist Church, where this concert took place, from 1989 until 1993.   We still have a lot of friends from this church and attended their 50th Anniversary Celebration in July of 2011.  It was this church for which I wrote “I Am Here”  after their buildings and over 40 members’ homes were destroyed in the May, 1999 F5 tornado that hit Moore and Southwest Oklahoma City.   The nearness of God’s presence is so necessary and comforting when our lives have been turned upside down; and there is no more meaningful picture of this fact for me than to see this photo of the group that so beautifully sang the message of  “I Am Here”….  in concert in the new worship center built by Regency Park.

And, He was there…just as He is here now.

Sometimes, we need a reminder of the nearness of our God.  Whether we are just feeling alone or are in a time of trial, the assurance of God’s presence is a healing gift to our spirits.  This assurance often comes directly from His spirit within us.  Sometimes it comes through reading scripture or through a sermon or testimony.  And sometime, it comes in a song.  Be encouraged.  He is here!

Some of the lyrics from “I Am Here”:

Be encouraged!  I am here….
Bring comfort for each tear,
Giving hope when all seems lost
In the power of the cross.

When the walls around you crumble,
And your heart is filled with fear,
Rest assured that I’ll be with you!
I Am here.”

Blessings through testimony

***  THE  PASADENA  TABERNACLE  SONGSTERS  ***
The testimony of others can be uplifting and encouraging to believers.  That’s really our main task… our mission… to share the good news about the love of God, His gift of salvation, and how He continues in relationship with His children, at work in our lives in ways that we often don’t even see.   We must share these truths and the difference that knowing Him has made in our lives with those who don’t know the Lord and also with each other.   We never know how the Lord may use our personal salvation or faith walk story in the lives of others.   As Christians, sometimes the testimonies that help to strengthen our faith walk are from people that we know personally.  At other times, we may read them in a book or magazine, hear them on the radio, in a movie or television show… or even in a song!

The group in this photo takes the mission of sharing their testimony of faith very seriously.  They are the Pasadena Tabernacle Songsters from the Salvation Army’s Pasadena, CA, Tabernacle.  This group has recorded several CD’s and does a major mission trip every year.  They recorded Travis’ SAB Anthem, “Children of Light,”  (published by Shawnee Press / Hal Leonard) on their “New Day”  CD just prior to a mission trip to Australia and New Zealand.   The CD is still available at this link:  http://www.tabsongsters.org/previous.html , along with their current CD, “Amazing Grace” and several other previous CDs. Travis’ anthem, “Children of Light”  is song #12 on the “New Day” CD (yellow cover), and the text is a perfect description of the testimony of this group:  “Saved by grace, walking in faith, following Jesus Christ…we are the children of Light!”

Here is the audio from my Sound Cloud of the Pasadena Tabernacle Songsters’ recording of “Children of Light”.  Although this anthem has also been recorded by others, the Pasadena Tabernacle Songsters are the only group which has recorded the song with the full Orchestration.  Because the Publisher, Shawnee Press, had not requested or published an Orchestration, the group’s director contacted Travis and commissioned him to write a Full Orchestration for this recording and for all of the times that the song has been shared on mission trips and in their home church.  (See the note about availablility below.)

The recording of their incredible choir and orchestra, singing and playing “Children of Light” can also be found on the web at:  http://www.salvoaudio.com/audio/music/mus_2515.mp3

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

“Children of Light” is still available from the following sources:
Pine Lake Music at www.pinelakemusic.com/Results.aspx?s…ch=Travis+Boyd
It is also available from Sheet Music Plus at www.sheetmusicplus.com/composers/Travis-Boyd/18033

Note:  The Orchestration heard on the Pasadena Tabernacle Songsters’ recording of “Children of Light”, commissioned by the Choir’s Director specifically for their recording project and mission trip repertoire, remains unpublished.  Travis contacted the publisher after finishing the Orchestration to see if they wanted to publish it.  However, the publisher declined.  It is, unfortunately, not available for purchase since the song is under Shawnee Press / Hal Leonard copyright and the commissioned orchestration is owned by the group (though they were willing for it to be published).

Blessings through worshipping together

The "Foundations" Worship Concert

Over 700 musicians presented a glorious worship concert, which was recorded on a DVD and CD, both entitled “Foundations.”

**  THE  SINGING  CHURCHMEN  OF  OKLAHOMA,
THE  SINGING  CHURCHWOMEN  OF  OKLAHOMA,
and  THE  OKLAHOMA  BAPTIST  SYMPHONY  **

Through the years, our lives have been blessed and enriched through the experience of worshipping together with other believers.  As we all focus on our loving God and Savior, our hearts are united in praise.  Many of these experiences have been in our local church congregations, while still others have been at camps or retreats, special worship concerts, prayer meetings in homes, or even in choir rehearsals.  It has been especially meaningful to Travis when his music has been a part of these times of worship, whether in large settings or in the home of a friend and brother in Christ.  Many of our closest relationships have been with fellow worshippers who have servant hearts and long to use their gifts to glorify the Lord through music, often in choral groups.   These incredible times of worship and fellowship are only a faint shadow of the rejoicing and praise that will take place in eternity.  Many times, we’ve imagined all of these choirs and congregations…and so many more…gathered around the throne of God in worship.   We’re very thankful that God has called Travis into His ministry and has allowed him to write songs that have been used by these choirs (and so many others that we’ll never know about this side of heaven) to worship and praise the Lord.

In this photograph (courtesy of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma), The Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma, The Singing Churchwomen of Oklahoma, and The Oklahoma Baptist Symphony are in concert at the First Baptist Church of Moore, Oklahoma.   Choir members from both choral groups not only filled the choir loft but also two sections of pews, one on either side of the platform, and the steps to the balcony on both sides of the choir loft.  A Concert DVD and CD were recorded live at this incredible worship concert, and Travis’ SATB choral anthem, “Amazing Grace, Eternal Life!”  (published by the Lorenz Corporation, Monarch Division, 10 3228M) was a part of both the worship concert and the recordings.   What an incredible day this was, as over 700 musicians from all over the State of Oklahoma worshipped together all through rehearsals and on through the concert that evening.   Soli Deo Gloria!

Here is the Sound Cloud audio of the recording of “Amazing Grace! Eternal Life!” made by The Singing Churchmen and Churchwomen of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Baptist Symphony.
What a blessing these groups have been in our lives and in the lives of countless others around the world.  All glory and praise to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who, through His amazing grace, made it possible for us to have eternal life.

There is a Song Story about the writing of this anthem, found on our blog at:  https://worshipsounds.wordpress.com/2012/02/01/song-story-amazing-grace-eternal-life/

“Amazing Grace, Eternal Life!”  is a majestic anthem of testimony, steadily building in intensity to the victorious ending.   The words to the bridge come directly from scripture, John 3:16 & 17.

Here are the lyrics to “Amazing Grace, Eternal Life!”

“There is a Love sent down to man,
A rugged cross, a spotless Lamb,
A life laid down, a sacrifice,
Amazing grace, eternal life!

There is a hope beyond the grave
With love so deep and power to save,
Rising above all earthly strife,
Amazing grace, eternal life!

There is a peace that all can know.
It calms the heart and heals the soul.
“Come Unto Me,”  the Savior cries!
Amazing grace, eternal life!

God so loved the world that He gave His Son
For us to believe in Him.
For the Son was not sent to condemn the world,
But to save us from our sin!

There is a home prepared for all
Who on the name of Jesus call.
A place of rest, a throne on high…
Amazing grace, eternal life!

A place of rest, a throne on high…amazing grace!  Eternal life!
Amazing grace!”

Who are we?
What’s the story of Worship Sounds Music?

Travis L. Boyd

Travis L. Boyd

Travis L. Boyd is a Minister of Music and Worship, who has served churches in Oklahoma, Texas, and Georgia.  He is also a composer, with Choral Anthems, Songs, and Orchestrations published by Shawnee Press (now under Hal Leonard), Lorenz, Choristers Guild, Broadman, and Lifeway.  (Our website and this blog both have a full listing of our published music as well as a discography on our ‘Published Music’ pages.)  Travis’ music has been sung and recorded by The Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma, The Singing Churchwomen of Oklahoma, The Sons of Jubal, The Jubalheirs, The Pasadena Tabernacle Songsters, The Atlanta Choral Guild, InOvation, The Farrells, and serveral individuals who completed custom recording projects.  Travis’ goal with Worship Sounds Music is to provide music for the purpose of bringing glory to God and encouraging the body of Christ.  His music has been priced very affordably to make it available for churches with a limited budget.  He basically charges just enough to keep the website going and pay for the shopping cart and Pay Pal services.  Although Travis has been writing music for many years, our website is relatively new.  His music was formerly available only through his Publishers and through inquiries from individuals who had heard his music sung by the groups previously mentioned.  The website provides availability for the as yet unpublished music that God has given through Travis.
